THE RISE OF CHRISTIANO RONALDO

On 5th February 1985, a baby had born on the tiny island of Madeira, Portugal. Little do everyone knows at that time that this baby loves for football will make him one the greatest ever player in the modern-day football and will make himself alongside with Pele, Maradona, Di Stefano, Cyruff, George Best and others great players. The baby is Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro and the popularly known presently as Christiano Ronaldo or CR 7. His rise from a little tiny humble boy in Madeira to the greatest ever player is astonishing and will be the inspiration for the upcoming football player.

CR 7 during his child and teenage years

Portugal had been blessed with a great player in the past like Eusebio whom had put Portugal on the football map with his performance with Benfica and Portugal in 60’s and later comes the Golden Generation of Portugal players that had won the FIFA World Youth Cup in 1991 with player like Luis Figo, Rui Costa, Jorge Costa and others but except for Eusebio they did not make the same impact as Christiano Ronaldo for clubs and country. Christiano Ronaldo had started his footballing career with Sporting Lisbon CP and in a friendly game on August 2003 where Sporting Lisbon had defeated Manchester United 3-1 and the young Christiano Ronaldo whom playing on the flanks had given Manchester United defender John O’Shea and Gary Neville a torrid time.

Due to this display, the players had urged the managers Sir Alex Ferguson to sign Christiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson had accepted his players request and had signed him for a fee £12.24 pound making him the most expensive teenager in the English football history. Manchester United before this had missed Ronaldinho who had signed for Barcelona in the last minute of the transfer and had sold David Beckham to Real Madrid during transfer windows and the vacant number 7 had been given to Christiano Ronaldo. A jersey that had been worn by Manchester United greats like George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham himself.

His debut with Manchester United coming as a substitute replacing Nicky Butt

In his debut in the 2003-2004 opening game, Manchester United is leading Bolton Wanderers with 1-0 and Christiano Ronaldo had given the Bolton defender a torrid with his step overs and brilliantly fast dribbling skills and the result the score line had changed to 4-0 in favor to United. But things did not turn well for Christiano after a fantastic debut as the critics had dismissed him as a one-trick pony, good for showboating, arrogant, and is a total waste of money. Worst of all his petulant display in getting Wayne Rooney sent off in World Cup 2006 was thought as a final blow to his Manchester United career but Sir Alex Ferguson quickly come to the picture and prevented Christiano from leaving and had resolved this issue in a typical fashion.

And the result in the following season both Christiano and Wayne Rooney had produced an amazing team work, wonderful skill, and amazing scoring ability and had delivered the Premier League title in 2007 for United after 3 years since their last win in 2003. But Christiano had proved he had more to his game with his devastating performance in following season 2007-2008 where he had scored 42 goals that include a gravity-defying free kick against Portsmouth, a brilliant backheel against Aston Villa, powerful header against AS Roma in UCL Quarter Final, brilliant placing header against Chelsea in the UCL final and many other. His performance had impressed everyone and even Johan Cyruff had mentioned that Christiano is better than George Best and Dennis Law. George Best had said that they are many players had been compared to him but with Christiano, this is the first time he had been complimented. His goals had earned Manchester United the Premier League title again in this season and most importantly the UEFA Champion League trophy for the 3rd time in their club history. He also had made history by becoming the first Manchester United player to won the World Player of Year Award. The critics that had dismissed him previously now hailing him as the world best player.

His 42 goals on 2007-2008 season had helped Manchester United to win their 3rd UEFA Champion League

His last season with Manchester United in 2008-2009 had seen him earned the Premier League title equalling Liverpool record 18 titles but they missed the chance to become the first team in Champion League era to retain the title when they had been beaten by Barcelona 2-0 in the final. Although in this season, his goal scoring record was not phenomenal he still had given some memorable moment like the long-range short against FC Porto in quarter-final or UCL and his brilliant display of free kick and finishing against Arsenal in the semi-final. His long-range goal against FC Porto had led him to become the first winner of the inaugural FIFA Puskas Award. The UEFA Champion League final in 2009 become his last game with Manchester United as he had been sold to Real Madrid for a world record fee of 80 million.

His famous long-range shot against FC Porto

His Real Madrid stint did not start with a bang and he had ended his first season trophyless. But as usual, Christiano had risen again by scoring 53 in all competition in the second 2011-2011 season overhauling his personal record of 42 goals and had won his first trophy with Real Madrid when they had beaten Barcelona in Cope Del Rey final. Christiano Ronaldo had scored the winning goal with a powerful header that beat the Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes in the final.

In the following season 2011-2012, he had won his first Primera Liga title where Real Madrid had made a record of scoring 121 goals in the league and winning it with a record 100 points. Christiano had surpassed his previous season goal scoring record by scoring 60 goals in all competition with Real Madrid a record in La Liga. In the following season 2013-2014, Real Madrid had ended trophyless but in the following season, the thing will be different.

Christiano had scored 50 goals again in all competition and had set a UEFA Champion League record by scoring 17 times including a penalty in the final and helped Real Madrid to win their 10th Champion League title that was as called La Decima. Things will be better for Christiano Ronaldo in the following season 2014-2015 as he scored a personal best of 61 goals in all competition.

The 2015-2016 season was his best in his footballing career for club and country. For Real Madrid, he had helped them to win their 11th Champion League called as La UnDecima and with Portugal for the first time ever he had achieved something that Eusebio and Luis Figo had been unable to achieve by helping Portugal to win their first major trophy at Euro 2016. In the season 2016-2017, he had sealed himself as the world greatest player ever by helping Real Madrid to win the La Liga and helping Real Madrid to become the first team in UEFA Champion League to retain the title when they had won the La DuoDecima (12th title) in this season.

Winning the EURO with Portugal

He had become the first player for Manchester United to win the World Player of Year awards, the first player to score more than 50 goals in six consecutive seasons, first to score in 3 UEFA Champion League Final, the top scorer for Real Madrid 406 goals and Portugal 77 goals, getting the most hattrick 32 times, the first player to win a major honours with Portugal, the first player to retain the UEFA Champion League in the present format and more to come.

What makes Christiano Ronaldo as the greatest ever player that he is being better each year and that is not something that even Lionel Messi had been unable to achieve. With the not so good Portugal side, he had won a trophy eclipsing Messi as he had not won any major honor with Argentina yet who had a far better team than Portugal. They are some players who had shown great potential but only diminished latter in term of performance and they are some great player like George Best, Maradona, Paul Gascoigne who had hit the self-destruct button by getting addicted to alcoholism and drug but not Christiano as his desire to become the world best had made him rise from show pony to one of the greatest ever football in the word.Christiano truly is the player that is self-made due to his desire, hunger, passion, and self-belive.
