When FC Porto’s Costinha had scored the equalizing goal in the 90th minute that will send FC Porto to the quarter final in the 2003-2004 UEFA Champion League second round, an upcoming manager had celebrated maniacally by running from the manager bench to the corner flag to celebrate with his player. After the match had ended, this manager had gone to the dressing room without shaking the hand of Sir Alex Ferguson. The manager is none other than Jose Mourinho who had successfully guided FC Porto to become the UCL winner in this season. The last time that a team outside from the big four had won the UCL. From these game, he had been noted by the big clubs in Europe and the lucky team that had hired him is Chelsea. He had introduced himself in the first ever press conference with Chelsea by announcing himself as “The Special One”. The form then on, he had become one of the successful managers in the modern era and with his success come a lot of myth surrounding him and some of them are wrong.
He only goes to the big club.
They are some truth in this statement but however, that is only part of the truth. The club where he had managed after FC Porto like Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid were a big club but they had underachieved for a long time. Chelsea before the arrival of Jose Mourinho had not been the English League Champion either the First Division or in Premier League era since 1955, Inter Milan although had won the Italian Serie A but in UCL they had been underachieved too as they not won the title since 1964 and had not reached final since 1972 and finally Real Madrid had not even managed to progress to the quarter final since 2004 before his arrival as a manager and worst they had been overtaken by Guardiola’s Barcelona team hurting them more. Even currently with Manchester United, they had under achieved and had not won any league title since 2013 after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. In simple term, the club he had managed had been under achieving for a long time and he had transformed the club to a successful one.
He is a defensive minded manager.
Jose Mourinho is not a defensive minded manager and the statistic from the club he managed was proof on this. In this first term with Chelsea in the 2004-2005 season, his team had scored 72 goals and conceded just 15 goals, in the second season on 2005-2006 they had scored 72 goals and conceded 22. With InterMilan in the 2008-2009 season, his team had scored 70 goals and conceded 32 goals and in the second season where they had won the treble in 2009-2010 scored 74 goals and conceded 34 goals. With Real Madrid in his first season 2010-2011 his team had scored 102 goals and conceded just 33 goals and in the second season the goal scored was an astonishing 121 goals and conceded just 32 goals. Each time his team will be the highest goal scoring team or the second highest goal scoring team squashed the myth that he is a defensive minded manager. In truth, he wants this team to be excellent, flexible and clinical in every department starting from the goalkeeper to the strikers.
He often parked the bus.
One of the famous game against FC Barcelona in 2009-2010 UCL second leg in Nou Camp where Barcelona was trailing by 3-1 aggregate score line. In these game, he had a man sent off and he needs to protect the lead hence he resorts to bus parking games. Most of the critic forget that in the first leg, Barcelona had been torn apart by superb play by Jose Mourinho that had led to 3-1 score line. In truth, most of the manager whom in the Jose Mourinho situation will resort to the bus parking games. Rafa Benitez did it after he had equalized the score line to 3-3 in the 2005 UCL final, Sir Alex Ferguson had done it in the 2008 UCL Semi Final against Barcelona in both legs, Arsene Wenger had done it in the 2006 UCL final when he had been down to 10 men and many other managers. So, in truth, Jose Mourinho had done the right tactical play according to the situation and will not hesitate to make a bus parking but only when the situation needed too.
He only works with big players.
With FC Porto, players like Deco, Ricardo Carvalho, Paolo Ferreira, and much more. With Chelsea, he had worked with Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and much more. With Inter Milan he had worked with the player like Gabriel Milito, Esteban Cambiasso, Wesley Sneijder and much more. With Real Madrid, he had worked with players like Angel di Maria, Christiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira and much more. This player had performed better and exceptional during his managerial term. Christiano Ronaldo had started to hit 50 goals and above under his guidance and Gabriel Milito, Wesley Sneijder, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Angel Di Maria and much more had performed to a world class level under him as they had produced one of the finest individual performance under his guidance.
He is wild and full of arrogance.
In truth, the way he answers the media is to shield his team away from any bad performance. He only starts ranting when his team performance was not up to the level as expected hence he will start to divert the attention from the team to him. By doing this, he is shielding his player from any unwanted pressure and putting the full pressure on him. Due to this attitude, the player absolutely loves him and willing to perform to any level under him. The player under him likes Samuel Eto’s and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Christiano Ronaldo, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and many other had put one their career finest under his management and this can be one of the reason. Although the are some player does not like him but most of the player under his managerial time loves him and is full praise of him.
Jose Mourinho is one of the managers that can provide some controversial moment, some tactical brilliance and shrewdness, some funny moments but one thing can’t be denied he is one of the greatest managers in the modern era and in football when some team or some manager had been successful they will a lot of myth surround them and as proven in these articles some of them is not valid.
