The World Cup had started in 1930 in Uruguay as the host and there also had become the first champion defeating Argentina 4-2 in the final. The World Cup subsequently held again 4 years annually in 1934 and 1938 before it was stopped due to World War 2 and started back in 1950. The current World Cup that is held in Russia is the 21st World Cup tournaments and they are some interesting facts on the World Cup.

Before it was called as the World Cup, the trophy is called as Juliets Rimets trophy. In the beginning, the team who had won the tournament for 3 times will have the privilege to keep the trophy permanently and the team that had attained the privilege is Brazil when they had won the trophy for the 3rd time in 1970. A new trophy had been designed and since then the trophy had been called as World Cup trophy.

The World Cup started in South America in 1930 and when they had held the tournament it was again hosted in South America where in 1930 it was held in Uruguay and in 1950 it was hosted by Brazil. Since then the last South America to host the tournament in Brazil in 2014. South America had the honor to host the tournament 5 times first in Uruguay in 1930, Brazil in 1950, Chile in 1962, Argentina in 1978 and finally Brazil in 2014. The European meanwhile had hosted the tournament for 10 times Italy in 1934, France in 1938, Switzerland in 1954, Sweden in 1958, England in 1966, West Germany in 1974, Spain in 1982, France in 1994, Germany in 2006, and finally Russia in 2018. Only France and Germany had hosted the tournament twice. Asian meanwhile had hosted the tournament for the first time in 2002 when Japan and South Korea had been chosen as the co-host and this is the first time that FIFA had allowed a co-host. The World Cup will come back to Asia in 2022 when Qatar was selected, and it was the first time that Middle East country had been chosen to host the tournament. Mexico had the honor to host the most World Cup competition when they had hosted in 1970,1986 and was chosen as the host for 2026 World Cup as they are co-hosting with the United States and Canada. Africa gets the honor to host the World Cup in 2010.

Previously most of the host country before Qatar had at least qualified for the World Cup once. However, Qatar is the only country who had become the host where the team had never played in the World Cup before. Now FIFA had decided that the host will be qualify automatically however in 1934 it not the case when Italy needed to qualify for the tournament. This is the only time that the host will need to qualify. Usually, the host of the World Cup will become the champion or at the least will escape from the group and playing in the knockout stages. However, this is not the case for South Africa when they had hosted the tournament as they had become the first host nation to never progress from the group stages in 2010.

The opening game of the World Cup usually will be started by the defending champion but since 2006 World Cup where FIFA had decided to make the defending champion qualify for the tournament, the host will start the opening match starting from Germany in 2006. Speaking of defending champion, they are only 2 teams who had successfully defended the title and they are Italy and Brazil. Italy had done it in 1934 and 1938 while Brazil had done in 1958 and 1962. Since then some of the defending champions had failed to defend the title with Argentina and Brazil had lost in the final in 1990 and 1998.

Brazil is the only team who had made an appearance in the 3 successful final and winning both. Brazil had won the cup in 1994, failed again in 1998 final and successfully winning back the title in 2002. However, Brazil is not the first team to make a successful final appearance as the honors go to Germany where they had made an appearance in 1982, 1986 and 1990. They had failed in 1982 and 1986 and had successfully won the tournament in 1990.

Brazil, Spain, and Germany are the only team who had won the trophy outside of their continent. Usually, when the European hosted the tournament the winner will be from the European county and when South America hosted the tournament the winner will be from South America. Brazil had won the trophy outside the continent in 1958 in Sweden and in 2002 in Japan while Spain had done it at South Africa in 2010. Germany meanwhile is the first European team to win the cup in South America when they had defeated Argentina in 2014 final where Brazil is the host.

If Uruguay had won, the tournament this year it will the longest year ever for the ex-champion to be a champion. Italy waited for 44 years before they had won their 3rd trophy in 1982 after last they had won it in 1938. The second longest will be England if they had won the trophy this year as they had waited for 52 years since last, they had won it in 1966. Uruguay will be the longest as they had waited for 68 years since the last time they had won in 1950. This is the longest year for the ex-champion and the year will be longer if both England and Uruguay do not win the tournament this year.

In the World Cup when coming to the knockout stages the dreaded penalty shootout will be used to decide the outcome of the game. World Cup had seen the penalty shootout between European and South America team however in 2002 history had been made when South Korea defeated Spain in the penalty shootout as it marks the first time that an Asian is contesting the penalty shootout against a European team. In 2010 another history had been made when Paraguay had defeated Japan in the penalty shootout as it is also the first time that a penalty shootout being contested between South America and Asian team. 2010 saws the first penalty shootout between Africa and South America when Uruguay had defeated Ghana in the quarter-final. At the moment in the World Cup, they are no penalty shootout between a European team and African team and between Asian and African team but with the African and Asian team increasing great performance in the World Cup sooner or later it will happen. When comes to the penalty shootout German had the best record as they had never lost a penalty shoot while England had the worst record as they had never won a penalty shootout in the World Cup.

Miroslav Klose had broken the record as the player who had scored the most goal in World Cup with 16 goals however Klose had done it in 4 tournaments. The player who had scored most goals in a single World Cup is Just Fontaine from France when he had scored 13 goals in 1958 tournament. Just Fontaine record is looked unbreakable as not many players had been able to score double-figure goals in a single World Cup and the only player who reached the double figure in a single tournament is Gerd Muller in 1970.

The final of the World Cup in 1994 is the first final that had been decided by penalty shootout and the last final that had been decided via a penalty shootout is in 2006 when Italy had defeated France in the final. The final of 1990 between West Germany and Argentina is the first World Cup that had been decided via a penalty winner and since they are no final had been decided in this way yet. The first World Cup final that had been decided in extra time is between West Germany and England in 1966 and since 2010 the winner of the world cup is decided in the extra time wherein 2010 Spain had won the tournament with an extra time goal from Andreas Iniesta and 2014 German had won it via a goal from Mario Gotze. In total including the 2010 and 2014, they are only 4 final that had been decided via extra time the first in 1966 and in 1978.
