WORLD CUP 2014 : ARGENTINA MISSED A GREAT CHANCE

A devastated Messi on failing to winning the one trophy that had eluded in the 2014 World Cup final

When comparing Messi and Christiano Ronaldo the debate will be one side to another side without any definite reason for whom is the best. Before Christiano Ronaldo started to winning trophies with Real Madrid, Messi is constantly winning a trophy with Barcelona and at some time scoring goals at an unbelievable rate. Messi once had become the first player in the history of football to score in 21 consecutive games a world record and also, he had broken the longtime Gerd Muller record for the most goal scored by a player in a calendar year with 93 goals compared to Gerd Muller 85 goals. In the past 2 season, Ronaldo had reached new height by helping Real Madrid to become the first team to win the UCL trophy for 3 consecutive times since Bayern Munich did it in 1976 and lifting Portugal first major honor in Euro 2016 when Portugal become the champion. Both Ronaldo and Messi had not won the World Cup with their country, where Ronaldo does not come near to winning it while Messi had a great chance in 2014 World Cup but unfortunately he and Argentina had missed a great chance in that year final.

Argentina in 2014 World Cup had somehow managed to get out of their group stages with a below average performance as this Argentina is not the most vintage side. However, since escaping the group stages, they had gone strength by strength by beating Switzerland and ever fancied Belgium in the quarter-final. In the semi-final, they had been given a tough test by Netherland with they had emerged successfully via penalty and Argentina for the first time since 1990 had reached the final and coincidental their opponent in the final is German and it is the repeat of 1990 final.

German is on a great momentum as their performance the in the semi-final against Brazil was brilliant and absolutely tear apart the host in that match. German had won the game with a shocking scoreline of 7-1 and this is the heaviest defeat for Brazil in the World Cup. The trauma of 1950 had been revisited by the Brazilian and it had been compounded by the biggest scoreline ever in the World Cup semi-final. Argentina does not have a great record with German after their famous win in 1986 final and after that Argentina had met them 3 times in 1990 final, 2006 quarter-final and also the in 2010 quarterfinal and each time they were beaten. German had become something like a bogey team for Argentina.

David Luiz had been heartbroken with the defeat against German in the semi-final

In the final, Argentina had a great chance in the first 10 minute when a suicidal back header by Tony Kross had gifted Gonzalo Higuain a great chance to score the first goal, but he had missed it. Higuain may have scored many goals but this miss is more associated with him. Higuain had scored a few minutes later but the referee had canceled as it was offside which by the way is a great call by the linesman. German had a great chance to score but Mat Hummel header had hit the post late in the first half and that is the only German shot on target in the first half. The German had been subdued by Argentina with a great defensive tactic by Argentina manager Alejandro Sabella.

Higuain had missed a great chance in the final

Coming in the second half, Manuel Neuer had escaped a red or caution form the referee as he had fouled Higuain and the referee does not award a free kick to Argentina or a throw-in to them but instead giving German the throw in. The Messi moments nearly come in this final when Messi beating the German offside trap and running pass German defender and making a shot that is just wide by several inches only. On his good day, Messi may have scored it but unfortunately, in the grandest stage, the ball just goes wide.

Since both teams had been unable to break the deadlock, the game goes to the extra time and again Argentina missed a great chance when Palacios had been given a great chance but again like Higuain he had wasted it. No other meaning action in the first half of extra time and in the final minute of the second half of the extra time the killer blow for Argentina had come. Schlender brilliant cross was superbly controlled by Mario Gotze and volleyed past Sergio Romero in the goal. German is leading and there on the verge of the history of becoming the first European team to win the World Cup in South America meanwhile Argentina must score a goal to at least pushing the game to penalties which they didn’t and German had made history.

Goetze deliver the killer blow goal for Argentina

Argentina had blown a great chance as they missed and wasted chance after chances in these games. If Argentina had won, they are several reasons to cheer on it as this victory will be the greatest ever World Cup win for Argentina. Messi will be lifting the trophy emulating Maradona in 1986, Messi will confirm his status as the best player ever and finally, Argentina will have put more wound in the Brazilian heart as they had won in the Brazilian soil. Argentina had totally wasted the great chances.

For someone who had winning trophy after trophy with Barcelona, Messi is unable to win any major honor with Argentina. Since the 2014 World Cup final, Argentina had reached the Copa America final in 2015 and 2016 but on both occasions, Argentina had finished runner-up. Messi who had been broken by losing the Copa America final in 2016 had been so devastated and announced his retirement from the international football before he had made a U-turn. Argentina was on the verge of not being able to participant in the World Cup 2018, but Messi had rescued them with a fantastic hattrick on the final game against Ecuador and book their place in the world Cup. Messi and co will try to win the World again in this year World Cup but the final of 2014 is, for now, the nearest Argentina had come to win the World Cup since the day of Diego Maradona and they had missed a great chance.
