Paris Saint-Germain v Chelsea - UEFA Champions League Round of 16

They are news in the British, social media, and other news related to Jose Mourinho signing a pre-arranged contract to replace Louis Van Gaal (LVG) as a Manchester United coach. If it is true, then we may see the most colourful, charismatic, and controversial coach renewing his rivalry with Guardiola, bound to the blue half of the Manchester and noisy neighbour’s as Sir Alex Ferguson had called them once.

Now let look at how Mourinho becomes so famous. He started his career as a  translator to Sir Bobby Robson and working with LVG in FC Barcelona. Mourinho’s first taste of management comes with Benfica in 2000. After nine games, he had left them due to disagreement with newly elected Benfica President Manuel Vilarinho and joined União de Leiria and led them to the highest finish in the fourth place. These led him to manage FC Porto in 2002 and win the Portuguese League Champion and the UEFA Cup in 2003 by beating Celtic 3 – 2 after extra time.

In 2003-2004 when they had qualified to the Champion League and drew against Manchester United in the second round, Jose Mourinho became famous. With these verbal and mind games against Sir Alex Ferguson, all around England noticed this young manager. The way he predicted the Manchester United player and the mad celebration that he made after Porto had scored the equalizer in the dying minute in Old Trafford had made the footballing fraternity start noticing him. In the quarterfinal, FC Porto beat Lyon and beat the Spanish team Deportivo La Coruna in the semifinal. In the final, they had beaten or thumped AS Monaco 3 – 0 and winning the UEFA Champion League in the 2003 – 04  season. For the first time since the Champion League era, a Portuguese club team had won the Champion League. After FC Porto, he had joined Chelsea.

After being unveiled as a Chelsea Manager in the press conference, he had uttered the now-famous word. “I have top players and, I’m sorry, we have a top manager. Please do not call me arrogant because what I say is true. I’m a European champion, I’m not one out of the bottle, I think I’m a special one”. With the typical swagger and confidence, he had announced himself in the English League. True to his word, he indeed transforms Chelsea from an underachiever to a superb, drilled, well-oiled ruthless team. With striker Didier Drogba, Damien Duff, Joe Cole in attack, Frank Lampard, Scott Parker, Claude Makelele in midfield, John Terry, Ricarda Carvalho, Paola Ferreira in defense, Chelsea had won the Premier League in 2004-2005 with 95 points, 15 goals conceded and one loss. They also had won the League Cup in that season after beating Liverpool 3-2. They also had performed exceptionally well in Champion League by knocking out Barcelona in the second round, knocking out Bayern Munich in the quarterfinal. The exceptional ran had ended in the semifinal when they lost to the eventual champion Liverpool. The following season 2005 – 2006, Chelsea had also won the Premier League make it a double. A pretty impressive performance as the last time Chelsea have won the Premier League was in 1955. Fifty years after that, they had won the double. In the 3rd season 2006-2007, they won the FA Cup by beating Manchester United 1-0. His record in Chelsea is 2 Premier League Title, 1 Fa Cup, 1 Community Shield, and a FA Cup winner medal. Simple, he had won every trophy in England during his three years spell. The following season 2007 – 2008 he had walked out of the Chelsea following a disagreement with Chelsea Owner Roman Abromovich after the defeat to Rosenborg in the group stage of the Champion League.

His next stint is Inter Milan started in 2008 as the Italian team underachiever in European Competition. He had made them won the Seria A in 2008 – 2009 but knocked out in the UEFA Champion League second round in that season with 2 – 0 defeat to defending champion Manchester United. The following season 2009 – 2010, Mourinho transformed Inter Milan team and made history with them. First, he had won the Seria A title. The next he had won the Coppa Italia Italian equivalent to English FA Cup by beating As Roma. But in the UEFA Champion League, they make an impression starting from the knock-out round where they have knocked out Chelsea in the second round and CSKA Moscow in the quarterfinal. Their opponent’s semifinal is Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona with had been regarded as the most outstanding club team ever assembled. In the first leg where it had been held in San Siro they beat them 3 – 1. In the second leg, with down to 10 men and a brilliant defensive organization to stop Messi, they kept the most excellent team to go through the final and beating Bayern Munich 2 – 0  and makes InterMilan winning the UEFA Champion League for the 3rd time. The last time Inter had won the Champion League was in 1965. After 45 years, they also had become the first team to win a treble by winning the Champion League.

With this success, his next movie is to the team that had been voted the most excellent club in the decade in 2000 Real Madrid 2009-2010 season. In Real Madrid, Mourinho had reached his lowest point with the defeat to Guardiola Barcelona 5 – 0. Real Madrid players like Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas had been critical of his style. They even mentioned that he is not a player, so he will never understand some tactical change during the game. In the UEFA Champion League, Real Madrid had been through to the Quater Final after being knocked out in the second round for six consecutive starting from 2005 onwards. After knocking out Tottenham Hotspur in the Quater Final in the semifinal is another meeting with Barcelona. El Classico in the semifinal. Real Madrid had been knocked out by Barcelona in the semifinal but gain revenge on them by beating them 1- 0 in the King Cup final. The first trophies that Jose Mourinho won with Real Madrid. The following season Real Madrid had won the La Liga by scoring 121 goals a Spanish league record, conceded 32 goals and had 100 points. This feat is remarkable as he is competing against Barcelona and wins with this margin. But in the Champion League again, he was knocked out in the semifinal by eventual runner-up Bayern Munich. In the King Cup, they reached the quarterfinal only to be defeated by Barcelona. The following 2012-2013 which is the last season for him with Real Madrid, ended in a lousy season. He had lost the league title to Barcelona, dumped out from UCL by Borrusia Dortmund, losing the Spanish Cup final to Atletico Madrid. For the first time in his short and impressive managerial, he had a trophyless season.

In the following season, he returned to Chelsea, where he made his name, but he never won anything on the first season. The following season 2014-2015 season he had won the Premier League and the last season 2015-2016 he had been sacked due to Chelsea slump performance. Now the media had been toying with the speculation that he will coach Manchester United. The assumption had been more significant after Pep Guardiola choosing  Manchester City as his next managerial choice.

He had never been short of controversies for all his achievement in Portugal, Spain, England, and Italy. In England, he had a bust-up with Rafa Benitez, Arsene Wenger, and many other coaches. In Italy is the same story where he had been in loggerhead with the Italian press, Carlo Ancelotti, and many other Italian coaches. In Real Madrid, he made the El Classico like the Spanish Civil War with his attitude, especially in the eye-poking of Tito Villanueva. His comment about referee Anders Frisk been in cohorts with Barcelona in 2005 had led to a furious backlash from the fans and forced the referee to retire from the game. His team also had been accused diver by Martin Oneill in the 2003 UEFA Cup Final, and Gary Neville of Manchester United had described that FC Porto like a sissy or divers. His team always plays defensive, high pressing, and relying on the fast counter-attack that does not suit the Manchester United all-out attacking style.

But for all negative aspects of him, they are optimistic as he will take the pressure from the team and let him handle all the fire. His player loves him except during his stint in Real Madrid. Didier Drogba and Marco Materazzi had cried when he left Chelsea and InterMilan, respectively. He will promote youngsters if they are good enough. As shown during his time in Real Madrid, he is ruthless. He had benched Iker Casillas, who was deemed untouchable, and replaced him with Antonio Adan, a relatively unknown player. His record of promoting youngsters, not as promising Sir Alex Ferguson and Louis Van Gaal.

One interesting point is that he always has a desire to manage Manchester United. During the press conference, post-match interview, and any interview, he always has a good point to talk about them. He will always be humble if he had been defeated or defeating Manchester United. The best example happened when he said that the best team had lost after his Real Madrid had knocked out Manchester United in the 2013 second round UEFA Champion League in the post-match interview. Ironically he had been mellowed a bit during his second stint with Chelsea as they are fewer controversies about him this time around.

If he is the  Manchester United coach, he would be successful, as his record had shown. He may bring a different adequate method for Portugal, Italy, Spain, and England.  He will transform the team as his record with a big underachieving squad is excellent. The only thing the entire Manchester United and we fan it to wait and see. For now, it is only a speculation, and nothing is confirmed.
