The UEFA Champion League knockout stages had seen some fantastic match and some shocking results. The knockout stages from the second round onward starting from the 2003-2004 edition had some of the great matchup and memorable turnaround in the second leg match whether is in the home or away leg. They are some first leg game where the home or away team had gained some great results only to be overturned in the second leg. From one leg to next round to a defeat is the second leg is what the competition is all about where team giving it all to give memorable games. Today we will see some of the greatest overturned of results in the UCL knockout stages.

Number 10

Panathinaikos 0 –  Ajax 3 in 1996 Semi Final

A shocking win in the 1996 semi-final against the defending champion Ajax in Amsterdam Arena had sent shockwave in the Europe. Panathinaikos is now one hand in the final and in the process to emulate their success in 1971 to become the first Greece team in the final but thing had changed quite dramatically in the second leg. Ajax who determined to become the first team since AC Milan to successfully defend the title had come from the brink of defeat to win 3 -0 at to reach the final again. But after the heroic effort their unable to match AC Milan feat as they had been defeated by Juventus in the final via penalties. But the semi-final against Panathinaikos is one of the best turnarounds in the competition and Ajax had become the first team to overturn a first leg home defeat.

Barcelona 5 –  Chelsea 1 in 2000 Quarter Final

Chelsea had gained great results in Stamford Bridge and was expected to be in the semi-final. But Barcelona who had Rivaldo, Luis Figo and Patrick Kluivers in their ranks stormed to 2-0 in the second leg but a mistake from Barcelona goalkeeper Ruud Hesp led Chelsea striker Tore Andre Flo to score the crucial away goals. Barcelona needs to start all over and on the brink of the elimination when Diego Garcia scored the 3rd goals to bring the game to extra time. In the extra time, Barcelona upped their tempo with Chelsea who had Celestine Babayaro sent off to scored 2 more goals to make the scoreline 5-1 and eliminate Chelsea. After their heroic in the quarter-final, unfortunately, they had been knockout out by Valencia who had made the first ever all-Spanish final against Real Madrid where Madrid had been victorious.


Number 8

AS Monaca 3 – Real Madrid 2 in  2004 Quarter Final

 When AS Monaco had been drawn with the Galacticos Real Madrid who had Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Ronaldo, Raul and Luis Figo in their rank, they are expected to have an easy game against Monaco and the first leg prove it. AS Monaco was trashed 4-2 and in the second leg when Raul had scored the crucial away goal in the second leg, things looks done and dusted for AS Monaco even when Ludovic Giuly scored a goal to level the scoreline in the first half. But in the second half when ex-Madrid striker Fernando Morientes scored the second goal, the tie had turned to Monaco favor as they need another goal to progress to the semi-final and Ludovic Giuly had scored the crucial 3rd goals to eliminate Real Madrid. With the momentum of eliminating the favorites, they had knocked out Chelsea in the semi-final and reach the final to become the first French team since Olympique Marseille to achieve this feat but they are unable to emulate Marseille feat to win the competition as they had been trashed by FC Porto with a 3-0 score line. But the highlight of their journey is the quarterfinal games when they had eliminated Real Madrid.


Number 7

Chelsea 4 –  Napoli 1 in  2012 Second Round

With the defeat against Napoli in Italy, the Chelsea manager Andreas Villas-Boas had been sacked and been replaced by former Chelsea player Roberto Di Matteo and Chelsea looked like in turmoil and were not expected to make a significant impact in the second leg that lead Napoli to be favorites to win the tie. But in this campaign where they had been the champion, Chelsea had proved their doubters wrong when they had beaten Napoli 4-1 after extra time in the Stamford Bridge. Although Napoli had scored the crucial away goal, Chelsea with their never say die attitude had made them winning this match and eliminated Napoli. The momentum of this win had led Chelsea to prove the critics wrong by beating Benfica, the favorite Barcelona, and Bayern Munich in the final to win their UCL trophy in that year.


Number 6

Barcelona 4 –  AC Milan 0  2013 Second Round

 When Barcelona was defeated 2-0 by AC Milan, they had 2 major task in the second leg. First, they need to score a goal and at some time stopping AC Milan from scoring the crucial away in the second leg which can increase the difficulties of the tie. With Messi in their team, Barcelona just did that when they had scored 4 goals and at the some prevented AC Milan from scoring with their high pressing game and in the process become the first team in UCL era to overturn a 2-0 first leg defeats. With Messi scoring 2 goals, David Villa and Jordi Alba in scoresheet, AC Milan had trashed by Barcelona by their tiki-taka, Messi greatness and the high pressing game deployed by them in this game.


Number 5

Real Madrid 3 – Wolfsburg 0 in  2016 Quarter Final.

When Real Madrid had been shockingly defeated by Wolfsburg they had some task like Barcelona did in 2013 against AC Milan where they need score goal and at some time stopping the opponent from scoring. Where in Barcelona Messi was the deciding factor, in this game it was Christiano Ronaldo as he had scored a hat trick to give Madrid a 3-0 win and after beating Wolfsburg, the had been superb form en route to their 11th Champion League trophy in that year by beating Manchester City in the semi-final and also beating their neighbors Atletico Madrid in the final.


Number 4

Juventus 2 –  Manchester United 3 1999 Semi Final.

A late goal by Ryan Giggs in the first leg had saved United from a defeat against this Juventus side who is on the course to be in their 4th consecutive final. Juventus had outplayed United in the first leg and the second leg Juventus were expected to win as they had never been beaten by any team in the home since the 1995 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the group stages. With the midfielder like Didier Deschamps, Edgar Davids, and Zidane, Juventus had stormed to a 2-0 lead to make thing worst for United but a Roy Keane goals and Dwight Yorke goal had turned the tie to United favour as they had increased the away goal and in the second half United with Roy Keane playing one of his best game in United shirt  dominated the best side in Europe at that time in their own backyard and Andy Cole had sealed the deal for the United when he had scored the 3rd goal to give a 3-2 win in Turin . With this win, United had become the first English side to win the treble by completing it against Bayern Munich in the final with the 2-injury time goal. United gave a heroics performance in this tie and earned a standing ovation from the Juventus fans.

Bayern Munich 2 – Inter Milan 3 Second Round

When the defending champion Inter Milan were beaten in the home by Bayern Munich thing look buried as Inter Milan need to win the German to stand any chance of progressing the quarter-final and Samuel Eto’o had given Inter to achieve this when he scored the first goal but when Mario Gomes and Thomas Muller scored one goal each to make the score 2-1, Inter Milan does not seem to have any chances to win the tie. When Wesley Sneijder scored the second goal, Inter Milan was given lifeline as they need to score one more goal to achieve the impossible task which they had accomplished when Goran Pandev scored in the last minute to give Inter Milan a win in German and knocking out Bayern Munich in the process. With this win, Inter had emulated the feat of Ajax Amsterdam in 1996 by overturning a first-leg home defeat but they unable to carry the momentum of this extraordinary feat as they had been stopped by another German team FC Schalke 04 when they had been knocked out by them in the quarter-final.


Number 2

Bayern Leverkusen 4 – Liverpool 1 2002 Quarter Final

In Real Madrid vs Wolfsburg and Barcelona vs AC Milan both teams had scored and stopped the opponent from scoring but if both of their opponents had scored the crucial away goal, things will different for both Madrid and Barcelona as their task will be harder and they need to score more goals to win via aggregate. This is what happen and achieved by Bayern Leverkusen in this game. When Michael Ballack had scored the first goal to level the tie, the thing looks balanced until Liverpool Abel Xavier scored the crucial away goal. Leverkusen need to score 2 more goals to win via aggregate which they did when Ballack and Dimitar Berbatov had scored to make the score 3-1 but they still to score another one when Jari Litmanen had scored the second away goal for Liverpool and now Liverpool look certain to book the all-English semi-final clash with Manchester United but Lucio had another idea when he had scored the 4th goal sending a euphoria in BayArena and to prevent the lead , Leverkusen pressed high Liverpool in the last minute to prevent them from another goal. With this win, Leverkusen had eliminated another English team Manchester United in the semi-final and progressed to final against Real Madrid only to be beaten by them with a fantastic Zinedine Zidane goals in the final.


Number 1

Deportivo La Coruna 4 –  AC Milan 0 2004 Quarter Final

The mother of all overturned results in UCL. When AC Milan the defending champion had beaten Deportivo 4-1 in San Siro the second leg looks like a formality as no team had ever overturned a 4-1 lost in the UCL era and AC Milan with Shevchenko, Kaka, Andrea Pirlo and Rui Costa in their, AC Milan looked certain to be in the semi-final. But Deportivo had shocked the entire football nation when they had stormed to a 3-0 lead in the first half of this game and now they tie had turned to Deportivo favor and when Fran Gonzalez had scored the 4th goal to give Deportivo a 4 -0 win they had completed a miracle of a comeback in UCL. Although Deportivo had been knocked out in the semi-final by FC Porto and they are not regular in the UCL like in the past, they had written the name in UEFA record book to become the first team to achieve this feat in the UCL era.

The UCL had given some memorable turnaround from several other teams but this team was expected and more than capable to turn the result around. But in this list, most of the team is not expected to turn the results and giving the difficult of the circumstance where they need to score and at some prevent the other team from scoring and also to win in the opponent formidable backyard is something that is always be associated with the beauty of this competition and this is one the reason on why the UCL is called as one of the best football club competition in the world and why many players will like to be part in this competition.
